PURPOSE:
- Class participants will:
- be able to recognize symptoms of infant distress
- demonstrate the appropriate maneuvers to help an infant with a
foreign body airway obstruction
- explain how to treat an infant who is not breathing and/or is
without a heartbeat by performing CPR
- discuss ways to prevent injuries and how to use the Emergency
Medical Services System (EMS)
- Learn how to child proof their home
- Infant Conscious Choking
- 5 Steps Procedure:
- 1) Hold infant facedown, supporting
face and jaw, while sitting or kneeling with arm on lap/thigh
- 2) 5 back slaps with heel of hand
between infant's shoulder blades
- 3) If object doesn't come out, turn
infant over
- 4) Give 5 chest thrusts, 2 fingers
- 5) repeat 5 back slaps and 5 chest
thrusts
- Infant Unconscious Choking
- 4 Steps Procedure:
- 1) Look, Listen, and feel for
breaths
- 2) Cover the infant's mouth and nose
with your mouth
- 3) Give 5 chest thrusts
- 4) Give 5 back slaps with heel of
hand
- Infant CPR
- 5 Steps Procedure:
- 1) Check for response
- 2) Open airway, check breathing
- 3) give 2 breaths, 30 compressions
- 4) repeat sets
- 5) if alone after 5 sets, call 911,
resume CPR
- Child Conscious Choking
- 6 Steps Procedure:
- 1) Confirm that victim is choking,
inform that you will help
- 2) kneel/stand behind victim and
wrap arms around so hands are in front
- 3) make fist with one hand
- 4) put thumb side of fist above
belly and below breastbone
- 5) grasp fist with other hand and
give quick, upward thrusts into belly
- 6) give thrusts until object is
forced out; victim can breathe, cough, speak, and responds
- Child Unconscious Choking
- 4 Steps Procedure:
- 1) open airway, check breathing
- 2) give 2 breaths
- 3) 30 chest compressions
- 4) repeat
- Child CPR
- 5 Steps Procedure:
- 1) Check for response
- 2) Open airway, check breathing
- 3) give 2 breaths, 30 compressions
- 4) repeat sets
